Choreographing is something I do in a room with other people. But with time and rehearsal space constraints, some of this work must happen before rehearsal. Starting with two phrases I created, Intimations dancers modified and explored these phrases in a variety of ways in rehearsals, focusing on shifting planes, quality and order of movement. My favorite phrase that emerged was a retrograde of phrase 1, which is the same movement phrase exactly backwards. The variety of phrases were then re-worked as duets or in groups and structured in an order. We workshopped these modifications as a group, watching draft versions and giving feedback for further development. Deana offered some of the most insightful feedback during the process - that one duet was like two people together in the same room but dancing alone, another a playful exploration of newness, another more stable connection. When I created these phrases in the small nook of an extra room in my apartment, I did not connect the work consciously to my own relationships and changes within them that became evident in the work without me trying. Here are some videos from rehearsal and a recent performance of our new piece "Tether" - still in progress, about connections we make to others in the past, present and future -- a reflection / manifest of my now. Looking forward to cont
